Experts were not aware of the faultline that appeared in the May 1 temblor, according to Professor Atilla Uluğ, a geophysicist at the city’s Dokuz Eylül University.
The aftershocks may continue for some time, Uluğ cautioned, adding that this depended on the size of the fracture. “First it took place within a distance of five kilometers. Then it could spread as wide as 25 kilometers. It would be better for us if it happened over time, rather than a sudden burst of energy,” he said. (İZMİR - Doğan News Agency)
