Spain trounced Italy 4-0 in the European Championship final on Sunday, extending its reign as the best team in world football.

Goals from David Silva and Jordi Alba in the first half gave Spain a convincing lead. Fernando Torres and fellow substitute Juan Mata added late goals.

Italy was down to 10 men after the 64th minute. The team had used its substitutes when Thiago Motta was taken off due to injury.

The victory lifted Spain to a record third straight major title, after winning Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

Spain even allowed Italy the majority of first-half possession, yet its trademark quick passing game was lethal when required.

Strong earthquake hits Italy's north

A strong earthquake of 5.1 magnitude hit northern Italy late on Sunday, in the same area struck by two deadly quakes in the last two weeks, Italy's Geophysics Institute said.

The latest shock was centered on the town of Novi di Modena, in Emilia-Romagna, the region where the two previous quakes killed more than 20 people and forced more than 14,000 to move out of their homes.

The shock was clearly felt as far away as Milan, some 200 kilometers to the north. Italian media said the belltower of Novi di Modena had been destroyed and several buildings in nearby towns that had been damaged in the previous quakes collapsed, but none were inhabited and no casualties had been reported. Eight dead in Italy quake: police

Written By THA on Tuesday, 29 May 2012 | 10:57

Italy was struck 10 days ago by a previous quake which killed six people and left thousands in makeshift tent dwellings.

A strong earthquake in northeastern Italy today killed eight people and sent panicked residents rushing into the streets, just nine days after another deadly quake, media reports said.

According to security sources cited by ANSA news agency, two people were found dead in the town of San Felice sul Panaro and another was killed in nearby Mirandola, where workers were trapped under rubble.

Several other people were also reported injured.

The 5.8 magnitude tremor hit just nine days after a quake in the industrial northeast which killed six people and left thousands in makeshift tent dwellings with many homes and historic buildings reduced to rubble.

Tuesday's quake struck 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Parma, at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the Geographical Institute of Modena.

The quake was felt throughout northern and central Italy, forcing the collapse of several structures already weakened by the 6.0 magnitude quake which hit on May 20.

In Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower, offices were evacuated as a precautionary measure. People ran out into the streets from shops and offices in Milan, Bologna and the Aosta Valley, close to the French border.

Around 7,000 people who fled their homes in the region when the first earthquake hit are still living in around 89 tent camps erected in fields, sports fields, car-parks and schools. The camps can take up to 9,000 people.

The region has been hit by a series of quakes and aftershocks over the past two weeks. (ROME - Agence France-Presse)

Italian banking sector hits back at Moody’s

Italian banking sector names Moody’s decision to cut the credit ratings of 26 Italian banks as an attack on the country. Prosecutors have already opened a probe into the world’s three leading rating agencies

Italy’s banking and business leaders has attacked Moody’s mass downgrade of Italian banks, branding the move as an irresponsible blow to the economically-strapped country while it battles eurozone debt woes and economic recession.

Moody’s downgrade of 26 Italian banks is the first round of a wave of credit rating cuts that is expected to hit dozens of euro zone lenders, adding to their difficulties in raising funds and exacerbating an existing credit crunch.

The move, which Moody’s pinned on a weakening operating environment made worse by Prime Minister Mario Monti’s tough austerity cure, came amid growing calls within the eurozone for a shift towards growth after months of strict fiscal discipline.

Pro-growth French President Francois Hollande is likely to press for a counterweight to austerity when he meets German Chancellor Angela Merkel on May 15 against a backdrop of Greek political instability and a deepening of Spain’s banking troubles.

“Moody’s decision is an assault against Italy, its companies, its families,” said Italian banking lobby ABI. “Once more rating agencies turn out to be a destabilizing factor for financial markets with their partial and contradictory statements.”

‘Attack against Italy’

Big business lobby chief Emma Marcegalia said she was concerned by such an “attack against Italy” and ABI head Giuseppe Mussari asked the European Central Bank and other European institutions to ignore the downgrade to avoid heightened funding strains and spiralling sovereign debt woes.

Italian market watchdog Consob, whose chairman has been critical of ratings agencies and of the importance attached to their rating decisions, summoned Moody’s in the next few days for questioning on the downgrade.

Moody’s move, following its February downgrade of Italy’s sovereign rating to A3 from A2, makes the ratings of Italian banks among the weakest in western Europe. Spanish banks, seen as one of the eurozone’s weakest links, are next on a hit list that will also reach Germany and France.

While large groups such as Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit have enough international reach and capital to absorb the Moody’s downgrade, this is more problematic for smaller lenders such as Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena , which now stands just above “junk” or non-investment grade status. Intesa Sanpaolo, which said on May 15 that it had boosted first-quarter bad loan provisions by 43 percent from a year ago, said it would have to increase by 2 billion euros the collateral it has to provide in returns for ECB funds.

Italy’s business community and some regulators have been at the forefront of criticism of the three top agencies: Standard & Poor’s and Fitch as well as Moody’s. Italian prosecutors have also opened a probe into the three for possible market rigging.

Meanwhile, Moody’s is also set to ‘significantly’ downgrade 21 Spanish banks within a week, following a cut of credit ratings on Italian banks, the Spanish economic daily Expansion said yesterday. (ROME/MILAN - Reuters)

Da Vinci’s 560th birthday to be celebrated with a trip to Italy

Written By THA on Wednesday, 9 May 2012 | 17:14

Florence is included in the tour program organized for da Vinci’s birthday.

Events will take place April 15 in many countries in honor of the 560th anniversary of the birth of Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. A tour originating in Turkey is designed to celebrate da Vinci, and includes visits to Florence and Milan

The 560th birthday of Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci, the creator of the Mona Lisa, one of the best-loved paintings in the world, is being celebrated this year. A special will leave from Turkey, to take those who want to get an up-close look at the famous artist’s works, and attend birthday celebrations for da Vinci in Italy.

The dates of the tour are April 11-16, and it will be led by da Vinci researcher Sevgi Gürtuna. Stops will include Florence and Milan. Gürtüna told the Anatolia news agency she first went to Italy, da Vinci’s homeland, in 1982, when she won a scholarship from the Istanbul Italian Culture Center. She fell in love with the country at first sight, and has tried to visit every region of Italy at every opportunity over the past 30 years. “It is due to my love for Italy that I finished my postgraduate education in art history.”

Gürtüna says she avidly read every article she could find on da Vinci since her high school years. “I have visited museums exhibiting his works, and studied his figures carefully. When I was alone I couldn’t adequately express my enthusiasm, so I began visiting the same places with my art-historian friends. Now I am curious about the synergy of going to these sites together with more people who want to feel Leonardo’s soul.”

April 15, da Vinci’s birthday, was declared World Art Day at the International Association of Arts’ General Committee meeting in April 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Celebrations will be organized for the first time this year. Gürtüna said 2012 will mark the anniversary of da Vinci’s 560th birthday, and it will be celebrated with many exhibitions of his work and events in many countries, including Italy, France and the United Kingdom.

Celebrations at da Vinci’s birthplace

The tour will start in Milan, Gürtüna said, where da Vinci spent 22 years of his life, and where his “Last Supper” fresco, one of his important works, is located. “After seeing all of da Vinci’s works in Milan, we will move on to Tuscany, where the painter lived for 30 years. We will see the streets in Florence where his atelier and house were located. Then we will celebrate his birthday on April 15.”

Gürtuna said the next stop will be the “Museo Ideale di Leonardo da Vinci,” Italy’s first museum dealing exclusively with the complex life and work of Leonardo, located in the town of Vinci. “I think this trip could appeal to anyone who thinks that da Vinci was a great genius. I will be very happy to share my years of studying da Vinci with those joining me on the tour. My goal is to capture the soul of his era, while introducing da Vinci as an artist, scientist and engineer. I hope we will continue to offer this tour in the coming years.” (ANKARA - Anatolia News Agency)

ROME – Agence France-Pressei

The U.N. should bolster its mission to Syria with up to 3,000 observers to give a full picture of the situation in the country, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said yesterday.

“We need 1,000, 2,000, maybe 3,000 observers, a major mission so they can visit the whole country and see what is happening,” Erdoğan told reporters at a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti during a visit to Rome.
